the space where your voice should be

Somebody spoke and I went into a dream.
“A Day in the Life,” The Beatles

when you are not near
to talk with

i talk with myself
incessantly

to fill the space
where your voice should be

i put on music
and imagine you doing the same

other people’s words
we have made our own

because we have nothing
that is ours alone except words

and in this space where your voice should be
from these conversations with myself

this space of loneliness and silence
i cobble these poems

trumpets crescendo in the background of my mind
and my skin lost without yours
